    • Are money and happiness connected? Yes and no. It depends on what you do with it. We're talking about three ways that I create happiness with money every day that makes all the difference for my clients and myself personally, too.

      1. Stop limiting all your spending

The first way to create happiness with your money is to realize that Impulse spending is not all bad. We've talked about this time and time again, but in case you haven't heard, you need to have a specific fund within your budget called your play account for you to impulse spend.

Yes, there are correct ways to impulse spend. Stop beating yourself up. No guilt, no shame, no judgment. You get to spend money, and in fact, you need to spend money. So stop limiting all of it. Just don't do it.

      2. Give money away

The second way to create more happiness with your money is actually giving money away. Creating a positive relationship with money is very important, and when you give money, you do that.

There might be some struggle in the beginning when you start doing this. If this is not something you're doing actively right now, especially if things are tight, there can be resistance to giving money away, but you need to do it.

There's a concept called Wealth Wednesday. Every Wednesday, you do a random act of kindness for a stranger involving a financial exchange. So what you do is you pay it forward. You give money to somebody in a way that they cannot repay you.

      Random acts of kindness

This can be like paying for somebody behind you in the toll booth. This can be like tipping extra on your bill if you're going out to eat. This can be putting some money in a box of diapers at the store, reverse shoplifting, or something like that. We're giving money because giving money is more scalable than just giving your time.

It is definitely admirable to be giving with your time and being able to donate it and do those things. However, you can create a bigger impact when you give money, and you feel good about it, and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I'd encourage you to share it.

Make that your challenge today. No guilt, no shame, no judgment, with sharing that you were giving money and that you feel good about it. Because it's not about bragging. It's about encouraging others to do the same, to give back.

Can you imagine the change that can be created in the world if we are all more willing to give? We all have a healthier, positive relationship with our money; with your money and giving to others, you will see a difference.

    3. Gratitude

The third way that you can create happiness with your money is with gratitude. Be grateful when you pay your bills. Be grateful for spending that money. Be grateful for what you have.

Gratitude increases our ability to receive more. We can't necessarily see that until we get out of the picture. There are always things to be grateful for. I personally do this, and I encourage my clients to do it.

Handwrite ten things that you're grateful for each and every day. It can be something simple. You have your eyesight. You have strength in your arms to hug those that you love. You have electricity. You were able to pay that electric bill. You were able to pay your car insurance. You were able to pay for your car payment. You're able to put gas in the car. That's a big one right now, right? We've seen gas prices.

You are grateful for what you have and are grateful when you're paying your bills. Yes, some of them suck. I get that, but when you do those three things, you're going to increase and create more happiness with your money because it is a powerful tool when you use it that way.

    Money & happiness

    Money & happiness

So we're not limiting all of our spending. You're going to be spending so you'll create more happiness that way because you're going to spend on ways that rejuvenate yourself, that feel good. You're creating that positive relationship with money, even with your spending.

We're going to take it to the next level with our giving. You're going to give money. You're going to help others not just with your time but with your money as well. It doesn't have to be a significant amount.

The third thing is we're creating that gratitude. We're grateful for what we do have and what we're able to do because, yes, it's something that we should do, but when you do that, you increase your ability to receive more because we are thankful and we are taking care of, and we're giving back to others with what we have now.

Those are the long-term principles that you need for actual financial progress.

Money and happiness are connected. So your challenge today is to give money in some way or some form. $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, or whatever you want to do. Post in the comments how you used your money to give to others.

    How to Truly Forgive Someone

From WebMD  How to Truly Forgive Someone by Seth J. Gillihan, PhD

We’ve all heard the familiar expression “forgive and forget.” The forgiveness part is fairly obvious -- we pardon the offender. And while plenty of petty offenses are too minor to hold in memory, we probably never forget being wronged in a major way (at least, I don’t).

Truly forgiving isn’t about forgetting but wiping the slate clean. We forget an offense the way we forgive a debt -- zeroing it out. Our memory of being wronged remains intact, but we no longer hold the offense against the other person.

Clearing the slate means we no longer see the person in a one-down position, as though we’re morally superior not only for having been wronged but for being magnanimous enough to forgive. There’s no condescension in true forgiveness. Forgiving in this way can be difficult. Some thoughts that might help:

See yourself in the offender. When we’re ready to release the burden of resentment against someone who has wronged us, we can start by seeing ourselves in the other person. That means recognizing that we could just as easily have hurt them -- and have likely done similar things ourselves. For example, it’s easier to forgive my wife’s irritability after she’s had a bad night’s sleep when I recall my own grumpiness while battling insomnia.

Consider forgiveness as a part of humanity. We might also realize that forgiveness is deeply embedded in who we are-a fundamental part of our truest nature. We are continually forgiven for all the ways we fall short -- we make a careless mistake while driving but don’t cause an accident; we hurt our partner, and our relationship is restored; we offend our friend, and they choose to forgive.

For some of us, this dimension of forgiveness will have religious or spiritual implications. Forgiveness is freely offered to us -- freely given -- and we can enter more fully into the flow of life by offering our forgiveness in turn.

Extend forgiveness to yourself. For most of us, the hardest person to forgive is ourselves. We struggle to let go of the harm we’ve caused to others or the ways we’ve let ourselves down. We haven’t forgiven the years we were caught in the grip of addiction, the thousands of dollars we wasted in casinos or the affair that devastated our family. And the less we’ve forgiven ourselves, the harder it will be to forgive others.

Even when we say we’ve forgiven ourselves, we often hold onto self-resentment that eats away at our soul. True forgiveness requires wiping our own slate clean, willingly and generously, without any lingering residue, like deep cleaning a whiteboard. We go beyond wiping the board with a dry eraser, leaving traces of what was written on it and an overall smudgy appearance. We bust out that special spray that came with our whiteboard and wipe it with a lint-free cloth till it shines.

If you’re struggling to forgive others, search within yourself and see if self-forgiveness might be available. Offer yourself more grace and see what happens in your other relationships.

    When to Forgive?

Forgiveness is a very personal decision, especially when we’ve been assaulted, abused, or otherwise seriously hurt by someone. I wouldn’t tell someone they ought to forgive any more than I’d tell them they ought to love someone. And while there’s strong research evidence showing that forgiveness is good for us, it doesn’t happen on command.

If you’re ready to forgive -- or you want to be ready to forgive -- gently invite yourself toward it. Ask if now might be the time. Maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. There’s a time for everything, even to hate. Maybe today, the answer is “no.” Maybe tomorrow; it’s still “not yet.” And then, one day, the resistance we kept encountering was surprisingly absent. We feel around inside ourselves and can’t find it anywhere.

We feel so much lighter, relieved of a burden that was no longer ours to carry. Far from feeling morally superior, we can’t believe our good fortune that forgiveness found us.

  • Do You Listen More Than You Speak? Qualities Needed in Trials to Help You Overcome

    Easter-Gift-Baskets-with-free-shipping

Do you listen more than you speak? That’s an important question to ask yourself often. I’ve always been a good listener. However, being slow to speak and slow to wrath have not always been my best qualities. I love how this passage from James 1:19-20 is entitled: Qualities Needed in Trials.
19So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20, NKJV)

    ·       Swift to hear

    ·       Slow to speak

    ·       Slow to wrath

Take a moment to think about those three qualities.

Ask yourself if you are swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. The Thomas Nelson Study Bible breaks this passage down – with these three qualities – and shows how they embody the message of this book of James. You can read more about being swift to hear in James 1:21-2:26, slow to speak in James 3:1-18, and slow to wrath in James 4:1-5:18.

The study of Bible notes continues with the following:

“If a believer gets angry in difficult circumstances, the practical righteousness of God will not be evident in his or her life. When someone wrongs us, the natural reaction is to retaliate, at least verbally (see v. 19). But this response does not glorify God. Holding one’s tongue, trying to understand the other person’s position, and leaving vindication to God – demonstrates godly love in tense situations (Romans 12:17-21).”

I can relate to James's passage, and the Thomas Nelson Study Bible notes. I’ve mentioned before in my other articles that I struggled for a long time in my twenties with anger issues. I grew up in a dysfunctional home and learned that yelling was how to handle things. However, God has done great work in my life through the years.

Being swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath are three qualities I’ve learned to cultivate throughout my walk with the Lord. I’ve learned how to become more emotionally and spiritually mature. I’ve learned how to respond maturely rather than react immaturely and irrationally to people and situations.

    It was sometimes challenging.

Yet, the following steps helped me to develop those qualities and become more emotionally and spiritually mature.

    ·       Developed a solid daily Bible reading time

    ·       Focused on prayer and worship each day

    ·       Learned how to understand my personality

    ·       understood that I need to understand people better

    ·       Sought encouragement and help from accountability partners

Three books that helped me during this time—aside from the Bible as my primary source and guide—were the following:

    1. The DNA of Relationships by Dr. Gary Smalley

    2. The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman

    3. Deadly Emotions by Dr. Don Colbert

Do you listen more than you speak?
