Trick-or-Treat! Fond Memories of Halloween

Halloween brings memories of jack-o-lanterns, carnivals, trick-or-treating, and lots of Halloween candy

What other holiday allows going door to door begging for treats and bragging about all the Halloween candies and treats?

Halloween candy facts

  • Halloween nets the most significant candy sales of the year, with more than 2 billion per year spent on Halloween candy.
  • Among the favorites in Halloween candy are miniature chocolate bars, Halloween candy corn, and other ghoulish candy treats such as chocolate eyeballs and wax lips.
  • According to the National Confectioner’s Association, over 20 million pounds of candy corn are made yearly, not only for Halloween! Candy corn is also manufactured for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Fall (Indian corn).

Other than the fun and sweet treats associated with Halloween, what else does Halloween bring to mind?

When “history of Halloween” is typed into an Internet search box, facts and traditions associated with this spooky holiday can be found. Most people don’t realize that the history of Halloween can be traced back over 2000 years with traditions that evolved from the Celts, the Romans, Christianity, and Paganism. For example, the first jack-o-lanterns were carved out of turnips, not pumpkins! Jack-o-lanterns were thought to ward off evil spirits that wandered the night on Halloween.

Costumes were worn for this reason – to scare the spirits into leaving you alone.

Fond Memories of Halloween

  • Waiting till sunset to trick-or-treat, then racing home afterward to dump the trick-or-treat bags and plastic jack-o-lanterns to separate the chocolate candy from the other, less desirable, Halloween candy.
  • It was bobbing for apples, “fishing” for prizes in the fishing booth, and enjoying a favorite Halloween candy recipe – the red candy-coated Halloween candy apples – at the Halloween Carnival.
  • Browsing the Halloween aisle to see the variety of unique Halloween candy bags created for the season and oohing and aahing at the wide variety of Halloween candy made especially for this time of year.

A person is never too old for Halloween candy! Everyone enjoys lots of Halloween memories, treats, and fun! What an incredible time of year for young and old alike.

Do not lose heart. That is such a powerful message

The Temporary vs. The Eternal; Do Not Lose Heart Throughout Your Daily Struggles   by J.M. Troppello

This past weekend, my husband and I were spending time with family. It was a nice, relaxing time of hanging out and sharing deep conversations. We spoke about our respective plans for the next few years. Of course, we also acknowledged that God is in control, and we all want Him to guide our steps. However, we also spoke about eternal things and how one day we’ll all be in Heaven.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Cor. 4:16-18, NKJV)

In my current stage in my walk with the Lord, this passage from 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 is truly a comfort to me. The title for this Scripture is listed as Seeing the Invisible. That pretty much sums up the message in this passage. Through every minute of your day, you can be an overcomer when you see the invisible.

So, what’s the invisible?

The invisible is all the things that are not seen through the eyes of the flesh but are visible through the eyes of faith. What you see with the eyes of the flesh is temporary. They won’t last. They will fade. Nothing here on earth will last forever. Paul was sharing this to encourage believers to keep going. He wanted them to see God’s Kingdom with their spiritual eyes and realize that the ‘light afflictions’ are only for a moment as compared to the eternal weight of glory.

Okay, so I get it. Many times, these trials we go through don’t seem so light. However, when you see them through your spiritual eyes – and that one day you’ll be in Heaven – that can help you thrive through them, rather than simply only barely surviving through them.

Do not lose heart.  I love those four words at the beginning of this passage: do not lose heart. Yes, your outward man is perishing, however, your inward man is being renewed day by day.

That is such a powerful message that I hope you can latch onto. So, the next time you look in the mirror and say, “Man, I’m getting old!” Or the next time you have a hard time getting up from the floor when your child, niece or nephew, or grandchild asks you to play with them, remember that you are being renewed inwardly day by day.

God is working in your life each day. He wants to cultivate a deeper walk with you and Him. Don’t allow your ‘light afflictions’ to get in the way of spending time with Him each day in prayer, Bible reading, and praise. Allow those light afflictions to draw you closer in your walk with the Lord.

Have your ‘light afflictions’ been drawing you closer to the Lord or making you grow apart from Him?

Inspirational Gift Baskets, Christian Gifts to Support, Encourage, Uplift, and Inspire

Some gifts are designed to delight, while others have the power to say thank you. But some gifts go far beyond the ordinary, aiming not to merely delight or thank but to truly inspire.

Christian Gift Baskets
Free Shipping - Gift Baskets of Faith
If you are looking for a unique gift for the believer in your life
, you cannot go wrong with a gift basket. Unlike cookie-cutter gifts that follow the latest fads, gift baskets forge their own path, creating a present that will be enjoyed and used long after the original occasion has come and gone.

Inspirational gift baskets are also a great way to share your faith so those around you can experience the same peace, serenity, and beauty that keep you calm in a chaotic world. Whether you are new to your chosen faith or have been following its precepts since childhood, giving a gift basket is a beautiful way to pay it forward and repay the many gifts you have been given.

The great thing about inspirational gift baskets is that they are as personal as the recipient. If you want to give a meaningful gift to a particular believer in your life, nothing says faith is quite like a Christian-themed gift basket. If you want to inspire the new Christian in your life and assist them on their journey, a gift basket filled with sacred texts and heartfelt stories could be just the thing.

When illness strikes someone you care about, it can be hard to maintain your hard-fought faith through a crisis, but you can ease the path for your loved one with a customized Christian gift basket. Inspirational and faith-based gift baskets can even assist your friends, coworkers, and family members in their time of greatest need. Those battling illness and caring for ailing family members can feel overwhelmed, so why not let them know you are thinking of them with an assortment of spiritual gift baskets? These heartfelt gifts may not have magical healing powers, but they can still bring a bit of light and beauty into what is otherwise a dark time.

Even when tragedy strikes and death takes someone you love
, you can reach out with a bereavement basket, one filled with things that show how much you care and think about the deceased and the loved ones they were forced to leave behind.

A grief and healing basket can be the first step on the road to emotional recovery, easing the burden while expressing the sympathy you feel so profoundly but find so hard to put into words. If you are having trouble finding the right words to describe your grief and compassion, why not use gift baskets to comfort the bereft and speed their path to healing? These thoughtful gifts of sympathy will surely be remembered long after the service.

When the holidays roll around, you can do all your shopping without a single trip to the mall or fight for a parking space. Just go online and pick out Christian Christmas gift baskets that celebrate the true reason for the season.

These spiritual gift baskets are perfect for everyone on your holiday shopping list, from the youngest kids to grandma and grandpa. And unlike some other Christmas gifts, these presents will not gather dust or be returned to the store.

From gifts to encourage and inspire to thoughtful gifts for sympathy to recovery gift ideas for the recently hospitalized, gift baskets can do so much. If you are looking for the perfect present to inspire and soothe, look no further than a Christian gift basket.

12 Ways to Pray for a Dad You Know this Father's Day

They need diligence and constancy to do all God has called them to do. Their families need them to be strong and loving providers. This Father's Day, pray for the fathers around you - brothers, neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Lift each father to the Lord so he can be for his family all the Lord created him to be.

1. Pray for his walk with the Lord. A man needs to be grounded in the Word and lean on the Lord, allowing Him to direct his steps. Pray that he has a strong prayer life and turns to God for strength to live the way he should. "The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand." Psalm 37:23-24 (NLT)

2. Pray for his relationship with his wife. Pray that he cherishes her and encourages her in all she does for their family. As his relationship with his wife flourishes, he will set an example for his son about how to treat his wife someday. He will show his daughter that she deserves love, respect, and other qualities she should look for in a husband.

3. Pray that he fulfills his role as the spiritual leader of his home. A father needs to exemplify faith, patience, a consistent prayer life, and self-control for his children. He needs to go before the Lord regularly for his own needs and those of his family. The family members of a dedicated spiritual leader feel supported, secure, and encouraged. "He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect." 1 Timothy 3:4 (NIV)

4. Pray for his friendships. A man needs godly men in his life for accountability and stability. He needs to allow his godly friends to speak into his life, and in turn, he will encourage and edify them on their path through life. Pray that he can keep away from "friends" who would steer him off course. "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)

5. Pray for integrity in all his dealings. As a man handles matters in life, his children look on, learning how to act in different situations. They learn about ethics and morality from him. Pray that this man is honest and dependable with a good work ethic. "The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them." Proverbs 20:7 (NLT)

6. Pray that he is open and loving with his children. Dad should be spending time with the family discussing life, feelings, and spiritual matters. The children should learn that there are times to be serious and silly. The family should have fun together, planning outings and times at home that are uplifting and enjoyable. "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by how you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord." Ephesians 6:4 (NLT)

7. Pray for his health. As the provider for his family, the father needs to be healthy and able to work steadily. Pray that he keeps himself in good condition mentally, physically, and spiritually.

8. Pray for business success. Pray that he is proficient in his field and gets paid for his work accordingly. Keep the company he works for in your prayers, that it thrives, enabling him to remain employed.

9. Pray for his self-image. Voices are clamoring all around him from work, home, society, and media, telling him who he ought to be and what he should be doing. Pray that he hears God's voice above the din, giving him clear guidance on who he is and where he belongs. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well." Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

10. Pray for his identity. As a man moves through life, he needs friends to turn to and activities to enjoy that aren't necessarily part of his family or work life. Every man needs hobbies and interests to enjoy that relax and refresh him, so he is, once again, ready to face the many demands of life.

11. Pray that he can resist temptation. Men are tempted from all sides in many ways. Pray that he is not tempted by pornography, extramarital affairs, pride, glory, greed, or any other ways modern men are drawn to live out anything but God's best for them. "The temptations in your life are not different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure." 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)

12. Pray for his priorities. Between work, family, friends, and other obligations, a man will often feel pulled in many directions at once. Pray that he keeps a good life balance, spending appropriate time at work, with his family, and in other activities.

This Father's Day, keep the men in your life in your prayers. As they care for their families and choose how to spend their time, pray that they stay connected to God, who will direct them and provide for all their needs. This is a Father's Day gift he can use.

If dad likes to go to the cinema, you can include vouchers for movie tickets in the gift basket and candy and other necessities. If home cinema is his thing, your gift basket might consist of gourmet popcorn, toppings, and other delicious treats.

The Fisherman Gift Extravaganza

If your dad's idea of a perfect day is standing around the local fishing hole, why not give him everything he needs in one handy basket? You can outfit your fishing-inspired Father's Day gift basket with various lures to fool the fish, colorful hand-tied flies, and many sinkers to keep the line in place.

You can also add other practicalities, including a fishing line and a new rod and reel. You can even add some gift cards for the local outdoor shop if you forgot anything dear old Dad needs for a fun day on the water.

The New Dad Gift Basket

For new dads, their first Father's Day is something they will never forget. Bringing home a new baby means that life will never be the same, but it also means that the new dad has a brand new holiday to celebrate.

From practical items like miniature clothing for the baby to fun gag gifts that will make him laugh, you can create a first-time Father's Day gift basket the new dad is sure to love.

The Gourmet Chef Gift Basket

If your dad loves to cook, a gourmet Father's Day gift basket is just the thing. You can start with a cookbook aimed at food-loving dads - think grilling secrets and lots of meat. Once that is out of the way, you can add all manner of things, from spices, rubs, and sauces to utensils that will make life easier in the kitchen and out of it.

The great thing about giving your dad a gourmet chef Father's Day gift basket is that you get to be on the receiving end of all those delicious meals. Make sure you leave room in your stomach for all that great food - your dad will surely want to share the bounty.

The Lawn Care Gift Basket

Does your dad love his lawn? Is his yard the envy of the neighborhood? If so, a lawn care gift basket could be just the thing for Father's Day and all summer long.

You can build your lawn care gift basket any way you like, basing it on what your dad needs and what he wants. Whether you add seeds, sod, and flower pots or fill your basket with gift cards for local nurseries and home improvement centers, your dad is sure to appreciate your generosity.

Choosing a gift basket for Father's Day is always a good idea, but not just any gift basket will do. If you want to make your Father's Day present even more unique, you will want to customize its content to focus on the things your dad loves to do. The ideas listed above can get you started, but the rest is entirely up to you.

12 Ways to Pray for a Mom You Know This Mother's Day

Send Mother's Day Gift Baskets
with Free Shipping
This Mother's Day, pray for the moms you know - your mom, a friend who's a mom, a new mom in your neighborhood, or an older mom in your prayer group. All moms need prayer. Here are a dozen ways to lift her up to the Lord.

    1. Pray that Mom maintains a good relationship with her husband. The best thing a woman can give her children is a good relationship with their father. Children who grow up in stable homes do better socially and academically, have greater self-confidence and have a better chance of providing a stable home for their families when they get older.

2. Pray that Mom does not give the enemy a foothold anywhere in her home or relationships. Satan is insidious and can use even the most mundane things of life to drive a wedge between her and her loved ones. The enemy seeks to destroy all that she is doing; help her by fighting on your knees. "And do not give the devil a foothold." Ephesians 4:27 (NIV)

3. Pray that Mom has wisdom in all circumstances. If there is anything a mom needs, it's wisdom and understanding of the many situations she faces each day. "She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." Proverbs 31: 26 (NIV)

4. Pray that Mom finds joy, honor, and satisfaction in her role as a mom. Motherhood is a stressful job. At times, she may feel as though she could be doing a better job as a mother or that there are other things she could be doing with her time. Pray that she sees the value in her role as caretaker for her children. "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also." Proverbs 31:28 (NIV)

5. Pray that Mom has a good relationship with her children. To be respected and obeyed by her children, there needs to be a healthy relationship with mutual respect and consideration. "Children, obey your parents the way the Lord wants. Fathers, do not make your children angry, but raise them with the training and teaching of the Lord." Ephesians 6:1, 4 (ICB)

6. Pray that Mom maintains her health. Self-care is so important. If a mom is not feeling well, she does not have the energy or desire to do all that God has called her to do for her family. Jesus called his disciples to rest and care for themselves when he said, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." Mark 6:31 (NIV)

7. Pray that Mom is able to manage her home well. A mom wears many hats: chef, chauffeur, nurse, tutor, finder-of-lost-things, and more. The only way a mom can make it through the day is to be well-organized. Pray for her to be able to handle all the tasks that come her way.

8. Pray that Mom stops to savor the ordinary moments. There will be a day when she wishes her son would climb the tree once more, wishes that her daughter would let her read her a story. Pray that she does not let these common yet significant times go unappreciated.

9. Pray that Mom is filled with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT). Each of these is essential to her role as caretaker for her family.

10. Pray that Mom holds onto her own identity, finding time to pursue her own interests. If she does, she will have a full life and ideas to share with her children through the years. When her nest is empty, she will have ways to keep herself busy and interests to share with her husband and adult children.

11. Pray that Mom is free from anxiety and able to trust in the Lord in every situation. With the many ups and downs and the scrapes and scuffles of life, moms can become anxious and fearful. Pray that this mom knows that God is working behind the scenes. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (KJV)

12. Pray that Mom has the wisdom and diligence to teach her children all they need to know about God and life. What children learn about God is caught and taught by hundreds of discussions and situations throughout the years. "These commandments are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)

This Mother's Day, pray for the moms in your social circles. Lift them up to the Lord, praying for a long life so they can watch the children they loved on and pour into become the successful adults God created them to be.
